The Profit Equation

Profit is essential in the continued success of any client that you may do work for. As a designer many projects have 3 parts to consider:

  1. Is good design a cost?
  2. Will good design earn additional revenue to offet the cost?
  3. Can design save the client money in other areas?
  4. Many projects designers work on have all 3 of these parts to think about. Designers must know how you can work with this part of the profit equation. This will help designers mold their career and help them advance on the projects that they are working on.

We all know that designs cost the client money. However a designer must remember that working can cost them money as well. Keeping up with the latest technology and software, having to buy stock vector or photography, or the use of outside design sources is something that needs to be passed on to the client. The designer must calculate how much they will spend, just as the client will on how much they will pay the designer.

Project and job descriptions give a designer an idea of what the needed to complete the task at hand. A good designer will help find way to reduce costs, create new products and designs and help increase demand for current products.
